The HGV failed to stop for officers, who pursued it through Smethwick, West Bromwich, Horseley Heath and Oldbury on Friday night.

It reached speeds of up to 55mph in 30mph residential zones.

The lorry was reported stolen in Staffordshire and triggered an ANPR camera in Smethwick at 11.40pm last night, alerting police.

It was eventually dumped on Farm Road, Oldbury, as the driver tried to flee on foot.

A police helicopter was scrambled in search of the man and caught up with him on Coterills Road, Tipton.

A 44-year-old was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and dangerous driving. He remains in custody this morning.
