Scott Blakeman stopped the pensioner in Sneyd Lane, Bloxwich, to ask her the time, before trying to steal her handbag.

The woman did not let go and during the struggle the handle broke off and the victim fell over and hurt her back and hip.

Blakeman drove off with nothing.

The woman was able to provide an account of the experience and described the company van Blakeman was driving in detail which led police to him, and he was arrested and charged with attempted robbery.

The 38-year-old of Tame Street, Palfrey, pleaded guilty on Friday to the offence which happened on September 10 last year, and was sentenced to 14 months in prison at Wolverhampton Crown Court.
