Teenager appears in court over fatal Stafford Road crash

A teenager has appeared in court over a crash which killed a pensioner.

Rabin Mahmood was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road accident and driving without insurance.

The 19-year-old is accused of causing the death of Hopton Gayle on the A449 Stafford Road, Wolverhampton, on February 19 this year.

He is also accused of failing to stop in his VW Golf after the crash, which he allegedly drove without insurance.

He appeared at Walsall Magistrates' Court today.

Mahmood, of Bransdale Close, Whitmore Reans, Wolverhampton, spoke only to confirm his name, age, address and nationality before the magistrates.

He was given unconditional bail and will appear at Wolverhampton Crown Court on December 12.

Mr Gayle, 80, had been using a pelican crossing when he was involved in a crash, an inquest heard.

He was confirmed dead at the scene.

Mr Gayle was a Jamaican-born retired builder, and had lived with his wife in Aethelred Court, a sheltered housing scheme in Wolverhampton.
