Appeal after serving prisoner escapes open jail and goes on the run

A prisoner serving an eight-year sentence after an attack is on the run after escaping from an open jail over a week ago.

Sam Branigan, aged 27, was a serving his sentence at HMP Hewell Grange open prison in Redditch for burglary and assault offences.

But he absconded from prison last Wednesday (10) and had failed to return.

It is believed the prisoner was involved in attacking two men with an iron bar during an attack in West Bromwich in December 2014.

Police say Branigan has links to Sandwell and Dudley and asked people to be vigilant.

Branigan is described as being of heavy build, with brown eyes and short black hair, with surgical scars on his left hand and wrist.

Pc Matthew Whitehouse, from West Mercia Police, said: "We are asking for the public's help to find Sam Branigan, and would ask anyone who has seen him or has any information on his whereabouts to please call 101."
