Councillor Maureen Freeman, who represents the Cannock South ward, met policing commander Sarah Wainright with fellow councillor Hyra Sutton, to discuss concerns of a rise of crime in the area.

She said the meeting had been encouraging but more needed to be done.

"As we all know and I don't think it's any secret, crime as a whole is on the increase and shoplifting is on the rise," she said.

"I do not know what the problem is at this moment in time is but something really has got to happen. This is not down to the cuts.

"I've held a meeting with Cannock Chase police commander Sarah Wainwright to try and do something about it. We'll be holding further meetings in the future together."
