Two men were reported to have been stopped in a car near the McDonald’s restaurant and Gorsebrook Road, on Friday evening.

Witnesses said officers arrested one man while another man was said to have fled. Police said last night they were still investigating.

Onlookers described the scene as ‘hectic’ and said that police were still searching the area around 6pm yesterday.

An eyewitness said: “There were armed police near McDonald’s. I saw when they first turned up, there were five police cars with a dog and a helicopter.

“They arrested one man and another ran away and jumped over the hedge onto the canal. It was quite hectic and there were a lot of armed police, they all had guns out.”

A McDonald’s employee said: “We had two armed police officers here. They had a man in handcuffs.”

Motorists were also facing heavy delays of up to 30 minutes last night as the incident unfolded.
