Amarjit Lgah had a history of offending involving members of his own family, including smashing up cars and threatening to damage the house, Wolverhampton Crown Court was told.

Police were called to the family home in Rosefield Road, Smethwick, on June 16 last year to find Mrs Lgah bleeding from a hand injury.

Her husband had lashed out with a knife as he was having breakfast, the court heard.

Mrs Lgah was taken to hospital where she had three stitches in the wound.

Her husband was brought to Oldbury Health Centre by their son who spoke to staff about concerns for his father's mental health.

The 58-year-old was described as 'quiet, emotionless and very coherent' whilst at the surgery, confessing to having stabbed his wife but changed his story when interviewed by police, the court heard.

The case went to trial where he was found guilty of unlawful wounding.

Lgah had a significant history of offending, including criminal damage, breach of the peace, sending offensive communications and possessing an offensive weapon.

In 2016 he smashed up his wife's car and in a separate incident rang or texted her 500 times, causing her 'alarm and distress'.

Last year year he attacked two more family vehicles and threatened to damage the family home.

The court heard he had an alcohol problem and and a personality disorder.

Describing his behaviour as 'abhorrent', Recorder Ben Mills told him: "I consider your wife to be particularly vulnerable – this was an attack in her own home, the very place where she should feel safest."

Lgah, of Highfield Road, Birmingham, was sentenced to 20 months in prison suspended for 20 months with a condition that he reside with a family friend in Smethwick and undergo a 30-day rehabilitation programme.
