David Mattox, aged 51, was already banned from behaving in a foul and abusive way anywhere in England and Wales when the incident happened.

Mattox, who had committed 204 previous offences and is of no fixed address, landed in trouble after falling asleep on a bench in Cleveland Street in the city centre following a drinking session in November last year, a judge heard.

When woken by the PCSO the furious defendant threatened to 'smash' the officer and called him the n-word, Mr Geoffrey Dann, prosecuting, told Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Mr Rashad Mohammed, defending Mattox, said: "He has mental health issues and had been drinking alcohol to drown out the voices in his head. He has had a problem with drink for some time."

The defendant admitted breaking the terms of the Criminal Behaviour Order imposed in April last year and also pleaded guilty to racially aggravated behaviour.

Judge Dean Kershaw sent Mattox to prison and told him: "You were engaged in disgraceful behaviour and have an appalling criminal record involving 204 offences.

"The PCSO came to wake you up and did not deserve the response he got from you but the vile language was not followed by physical violence."
