Wolverhampton delivery driver jailed after killing woman as he lit cigarette
A delivery driver from Wolverhampton has been jailed after hitting and killing a woman as he lit a cigarette.
Tomas Marcinkus struck Claire McKenzie, aged 35, while driving along Sutton New Road in Erdington, Birmingham, in the early hours of November 11, 2016.
The victim suffered serious head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ms McKenzie had been at a friend’s birthday party earlier that evening and was making her way home when the accident happened.
Marcinkus, aged 29, of Second Avenue, Low Hill, left the scene but he was tracked down following a police investigation.
He admitted death by careless driving at an earlier hearing and was jailed for 12 months at Birmingham Crown Court.
Marcinkus - who said he had not realised there was a person on the road - was also banned from driving for two-and-a-half years.
