Police were called to the store, in Walsall Road, Great Barr, at the Scott Arms junction at around 12.30pm today.

West Midlands Police say the knifeman entered the busy shop and threatened staff inside.

It is believed he pushed workers into a staff room before making off with an unknown quantity of cash.

A force spokeswoman said there were no reported injuries.

A spokeswoman for Poundland said: “We can confirm the police were called to our Great Barr store.

"The incident is currently being investigated by the local authorities.”

Investigations remain on-going and anyone with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting log 876 of 13 December.

The store had once been a 99p Store before Poundland completed the buyout of the company around two years ago.

Previously the building had been home to Somerfield and Gateway supermarkets.
