The two women were walking from High Street into Harrison Street at 6.55am, when a man approached them from behind and shouted at them to give him their handbags.

The man grabbed a bag from one of the women and then lifted his top to reveal a 12 inch long knife tucked into his waist band.

He then struggled with the second woman and pushed her to the floor before making off with both women’s handbags. He was joined by an accomplice across the street and the pair then ran off across High Street, past Greggs bakery onto Market Place.

A member of the public then tackled one of the men and managed to retrieve one of the handbags, which he returned to its owner.

The men were described as white and clean shaven, in their late twenties to early thirties with skinny builds. One was wearing a dark shell-suit top and trousers with a distinctive double stripe down the seams. The other had mousey coloured hair and was wearing a camouflage patterned white top with cream trousers. One of the men was also wearing a dark coloured baseball cap.

The incident happened on Friday October 13.

Pc Kerry Haywood, from Walsall CID, said: “We know there were a few people in the area at the time who may have witnessed this attack, including the man who challenged the attacker and got one of the bags back.
