Police are now searching for the driver of the car, who ran off after hitting the mother and baby as they crossed the dual carriageway in Great Barr yesterday.

The 28-year-old and four-day-old - who was in a pram when the crash happened - were both taken to hospital, where the mother remains in a critical condition. The baby has now been discharged.

The driver of the car - a blue Mazda MPS Sports Aero Kit - ran off in the direction of Dyas Avenue after the incident happened near Beeches Road at around 6pm.

Officers have now urged the driver to hand themself in and are appealing for any witnesses to come forward.

Interactive map of the area:

The crash was one of two serious incidents within a mile of each other on Saturday evening. A man later died in hospital after the BMW he was driving was involved in a crash with a double-decker bus on Hamstead Road at around 9pm.

Regarding the hit-and-run, Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes from the West Midlands Police Collision Investigation Unit said: "This investigation is in its early stages and we are trying to establish exactly what happened.

"I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision and hasn’t yet spoken to police to make contact.

“The vehicle involved was a blue Mazda MPS Aero Sports registration number DV07 MWN.

"If anyone can provide information about this vehicle and its use I would like to hear from them.

"I would also appeal directly to the driver to do the right thing; come forward and speak to us now."

It is not the first serious crash on the stretch of Walsall Road near Badshah Palace and the Co-Operative supermarket. Sarah Child was killed by speeding driver Amirul Islam on Walsall Road in 2012 and her mother has since campaigned for a review of the road's 40mph speed limit.

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 101 or email fl_collision_invest@west-midlands.pnn.police.uk and quote log 2124 23/09/17.

Alternatively people can pass information on anonymously via the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
