The machinery was stolen this week along the A4, although Midland Metro bosses have said that the theft will not impact the continuation of the works.

The machinery was owned by Midland Metro Alliance and is believed to be worth around £5,000.

A spokesman for the Alliance said: "The MMA were the victims of theft this week during an incident on Bilston Road where items of machinery were stolen. We are working with West Midlands Police Authority regarding the crime since we notified them of it.

"The theft of items does not impact our works on the Bilston Road and excellent progress continues to be made."

An police investigation has already begun, with officers seeking CCTV from shops and businesses along the road.

The Bilston Road was closed from June 11 this year for traffic entering the city, with drivers having to travel along the A463 Black Country Route to the A4123 Birmingham New Road instead.

Drivers are still able to exit the city along the road.

The work is due to be completed by Christmas. Wolverhampton St George's and The Royal tram stops are completely out of action while the work continues.
