Mr Morgan, currently the deputy chief constable at Avon and Somerset, had provisionally been picked by the county's police and crime commissioner Matthew Ellis to head up the force.

However Mr Ellis's decision had to be ratified by the county's police and crime panel, who did so on Monday afternoon.

He said: "We had exceptionally strong candidates for the position, but DCC Morgan demonstrated the knowledge and breadth of experience needed to take the force through the huge period of change needed over the coming months to meet the ever-changing face of crime and evolving threats.

"It is clear that he has the right attributes needed to be an effective chief constable and I am looking forward to working together to deliver the plans that we have set out for the next few years."

Mr Morgan, whose career started with West Midlands Police in 1990 and has featured a spell with the FBI, will officially start on Monday June 19.

He said: "I am grateful to the police and crime panel for their deliberations and I am delighted to have my appointment of chief constable confirmed. I look forward to joining the force on 19 June."
