Malcolm Torrance is charged with wounding Dr David Winteler at Linkway Medical Practice in the Lyng Centre, Frank Fisher Way, on Monday.

Torrance, of Swan Avenue, Smethwick, is also charged with possessing a 16cm kitchen knife in a public place.

He gave no indication of his plea to either charge yesterday at Sandwell Magistrates Court.

Magistrates said the case was too serious for their sentencing powers and adjourned it until April 30 at Wolverhampton Crown Court. Torrance was denied bail.

The medical practice said Dr Winteler had been discharged from hospital.
