Two suspects were arrested by firearms officers following a two-mile chase along a canal towpath.

Officers were called to the sub-post office in Beacon Road, Pheasey, following reports raiders had stolen cash from a customer.

Details of a suspected getaway car were radioed to police officers who, moments later, spotted a BMW 3-series matching the description and driving at speed.

The driver of the car lost control in Lake Road, on the Park Hall Estate, and collided with a lamp-post.

Two men were then chased down onto a canal towpath. One was found hiding in bushes and was arrested while the second gave up following a two-mile pursuit.

Police today launched an appeal for witnesses, as they praised the officers.

Inspector Simon Pemberton, West Midlands Police firearms training manager, said armed officers were trained to a high level of fitness.

Anyone who saw the robbery, saw offenders fleeing the scene, or were in the Park Hall area when the BMW crashed should call 101. They can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
