One of the UK’s biggest retailers is looking to boost the hygiene experience of its customers even further by investing in antimicrobial product protection at key contact points within its stores.

Asda has joined forces with shop equipment specialist Wanzl to use its Shield Master product on thousands of shopping trolley handles, door handles, hand baskets and colleague equipment.

The solution is powered by Addmaster’s Biomaster technology and follows extensive testing in laboratories and across a number of shops.

Wanzl Shield Master can be applied within the manufacturing process, providing inbuilt Biomaster antimicrobial technology protection for the life of the product, or it can be added to durable ceramic-based coatings, which can be retrospectively applied to equipment already in service.

“Supermarket shopping is a vital lifeline for most of us,” explained Marc Radforth, Sales and Marketing Director of Wanzl UK & Ireland.

“We worked with Addmaster to embark on a rapid development programme to develop solutions that could be tested and implemented quickly, giving additional antimicrobial product protection to the retail environment.”

He continued: “We are very proud to be actively supporting our clients to offer consumers the most hygienic shopping experience available.

“Working with Biomaster is a critical step; enabling us to apply proven antimicrobial technology to the equipment that consumers frequently interact with as part of their shopping experience.”

Paul Morris, founder of Stafford-based Addmaster and the creator of Biomaster antimicrobial technology, added: “As the retail world adapts to the new demands and concerns of consumers, it has to provide an environment that is as safe as possible to encourage people back into stores.

“Our relationship with a market leader, such as Wanzl, is crucial to getting the technology adopted quickly so that it reaches large parts of society. It is great news that Asda has reinforced its reputation as The Grocer and Shepper’s safest supermarket by embracing our technology.”

He concluded: “Wanzl Shield Master has also been applied to the luggage trolley handles at Birmingham airport, whilst our Biomaster technology is currently being introduced to protect surfaces for passengers inside airplane cabins.”

Addmaster, which recently won its third Queen’s Award earlier this year, is ramping up activities to cope with the growth in demand, including increasing production and appointing additional sales resource to deal with enquiries.
