Ralph Findlay of Wolverhampton-based Marston's said: "‘The Chancellor’s Budget was very positive for pubs. The VAT cut will make a huge difference, particularly to pubs selling food, and the discount scheme is clearly intended to get the message out that it is time to return to pubs and restaurants.

"The employment measures for young people are also important – around half our workforce are under the age of 25. The 'budget' was bold, and innovative – I congratulate the Chancellor for that"

Mr Findlay had called for the Government to urgently cut the rate of VAT to five per cent to aid the hospitality industry ahead of the economic statement by the Chancellor.
