Father and son team up in drainage business

By John Corser | Business Picks | Published:

Having spent over two decades running his own heating and plumbing organisation, Steve Lawless has teamed up with his son, Myles, and they are about to embark on their first business venture together as a new Drain Doctor franchise covering Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent.

Myles and Steve Lawless have teamed up to launch a new Drain Doctor franchise for Stoke-on-Trent and Stafford

Steve, a qualified heating engineer, has worked with many commercial and domestic customers over the years and decided he wanted to build a business with his son.

Myles, also a qualified plumbing and electrical engineer, will work with his father on the management of the business as well as a technician visiting customers across Staffordshire. Other Lawless family members will be involved in the business, including Steve’s brother in the office and his nephew, who is one of the technicians.

The new office, which is based in Dunston, near Stafford, started trading on August 28.

It has a team of six technicians, two support staff and four Drain Doctor branded vans and will help customers with their heating, plumbing and drainage needs.

Not wanting to start a new business again from scratch, Steve chose to go down the franchising route and make an investment in a sector which he knew well and was growing fast. Drain Doctor fitted the bill. It is part of the Dwyer Group, one of the world’s largest parent companies of home service brands, with a franchise network of over 3,300 franchisees worldwide.

Steve Lawless said: “Myles and I have been looking for a way to work together for a number of years and knew we had the experience, commitment and enthusiasm to make it work. Drain Doctor gives us a great opportunity to go into business as a team delivering a service that we are passionate about to the community.

"Having run my own business previously, I am not daunted by the challenges that lie ahead and we are both looking forward to getting stuck in and being a key player in our community. We are very excited to be the new franchise owners of Drain Doctor Stafford and Stoke-on-Trent, and knowing we have the wider support, expertise and resource available from the Dwyer Group and other Drain Doctor franchisees, gives us both confidence and peace of mind.”
