The shop, off Penn Road, closed on December 31 and Tesco bought it and originally planned for it to open in May.

The delay is due to a revised schedule of work, the supermarket giant said.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We’re excited to be opening our first Tesco Superstore in Wolverhampton and we look forward to serving the local community when our doors open in July.”

Bosses had previously said the 140 staff members at Wolverhampton Waitrose will transfer to Tesco.

The Wolverhampton staff members have also been told they can explore opportunities to continue working for Waitrose, either at other shops or online, rather than transfer to Tesco.
