Paul Wood had worked for the Andrews Sykes Group for the whole of his working life after joining from school in 1978.

Mr Wood died after a short illness.

It had only been announced on January 18 that he was taking a leave of absence due to ill health.

Andrews Sykes, which has its head office at St David's Court, Union Street, issued a statement: “The board of Andrews Sykes is deeply saddened to announce the death of its long-serving managing director, Paul Wood.

“Paul himself worked for the group for the whole of his working life, joining from school in 1978. Having risen to the top of the business, his leadership has been exemplary, and he has delivered excellent and consistent returns for shareholders.

“Equally, he has built a strong management team around him and in Carl Webb we have a fine leader who has been the group’s acting managing director since Paul’s illness was announced.”

Mr Webb was previously the managing director of the company's UK businesses.

Mr Wood had been group managing director for the heating, air conditioning and pumps hire group since December 2006 after previously being operations director from March that year.

He was a hire industry specialist and was responsible for all group operational matters and the implementation of the company’s strategy.
