A “Brexit lorry park” could be created at Birmingham Airport for goods coming into and leaving the UK by air and be in use for two years.

The new base would be used for goods coming in and going out of the UK

The Inland Border Facility, to be set up by HM Revenue & Customs, would see up to 198 lorries operating from land currently used as Car Park 6 and it could employ up to 150 people once up and running.

The site would be used as an office for starting and ending transit movements of goods.

It includes parking areas for heavy goods vehicles and other vehicles as well as security measures and facilities to enable the checking of all the vehicles and goods entering and exiting the site.

The Government is using Special Development Order powers to push through the site. This means that it does not have to submit a formal planning application to Solihull Council.

The planning decision will be taken directly by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. Residents in the area near to the car park have been asked for feedback on the plans for the site.

A statement on the consultation website says: “The inland border facility proposals are temporary and are designed to ensure no significant or long-term environmental effects.

“HMRC has reviewed the options for use of the site and based on current planning, expect the site to be needed for up to two years.”
