DX, which has two DX Freight sites employing 500 – including its main hub – in Willenhall and a DX Courier site at Bloomfield Park Industrial Park, Tipton, has seen a downturn in overall volumes.

The group provides parcel freight, secure, courier and logistics services.

Its DX Express division that provides secure, tracked and express delivery services, including highly secure deliveries for medical laboratories, independent pharmacies and central Government departments amongst other customers, has stepped up provision to accommodate the material rise in volumes over the last six weeks. Demand has come in particular from customers with supply links to hospitals.

Tony Kells, sales director at DX Express, said: “Our secure, tracked delivery services have seen volumes of items per day quadruple in some areas, largely driven by the needs of hospitals. Areas showing the strongest rises include deliveries of key worker uniforms and specimen samples between laboratories and hospitals. These rises are directly related to the coronavirus pandemic, and we are allocating additional resource to ensure we can meet this demand. Deliveries to high street pharmacies also remain busy nationwide.”

Group chief executive Lloyd Dunn added: “While the nationwide ‘lockdown’ has caused a decrease in group volumes overall, it is especially important that we meet the needs of customers who serve the healthcare and essential services sectors as well as those individuals in society most at risk from Covid-19. The response by our people has been tremendous as we have stepped up to meet increased demand from these important customer groups.”

DX was established in 1975 as a document exchange service to the legal sector and now provides one of the widest ranges of overnight delivery services in the market, as well as comprehensive logistics services. The business transports items ranging from confidential documents to large, awkward-to-handle freight that is unsuitable for standard conveyors.

The group saw activity drop by a third in the immediate wake of the UK lockdown over the coronavirus pandemic.

It has its headquarters in Berkshire and employs 3,000 staff.
