Hortons Estate Limited has submitted a proposal to Walsall Council to build a new warehouse unit and a retail unit, along with car parking spaces, on vacant land off Wharf Approach.

And bosses confirmed that the “known tenant” of the retail space is Greggs and the unit will be designed to meet their specifications.

Representatives for Hortons said the creation of the two units would provide a huge boost for the area, creating a number of jobs and making use of derelict land.

The bakery could be allowed to open from 6am to 10pm with deliveries allow for an hour before and after.

There would be more 40 car parking spaces as well as cycling racks and a service yard built as part of the scheme.

The applicants say it would operate both day and night.

Consultants Applied Planning said: “The application is submitted with Greggs as a known tenant and the proposed unit is designed to meet the requirements of Greggs’ business model (or a similar bakery operator).

“The proposed Greggs bakery will offer baked and convenience goods including bread, savoury pastries, cakes, sandwiches, soups , salads, pasta, snacks, hot wraps, confectionery hot and cold drinks and other ancillary items.

“These items will be sold for consumption on or off the premises. The new store will comprise a back of house area and a customer area to include a seating area allowing customers to ‘eat in’.

“The business model of the proposed Greggs will be to provide a sustainable facility for workers within the immediate industrial estate by providing baked and convenience goods for meal times during employment hours for local workers in a location which is easily accessible to the local workforce.

“It is envisaged that a Greggs of this size will generate 12 jobs, including a range of full and part time opportunities. These jobs would be recruited locally.”

A decision will be made in the coming weeks.
