Next will open on November 7

The retail giant will open the doors of its 17,700 sq ft store on November 7 after moving from its existing unit.

It has transformed the 1980s-built building into a modern, glass-fronted shop, and stamped its name on the landmark clock tower, which overlooks the busy Ring Road St Johns, just outside Wolverhampton city centre.

The store also features stationary chain Paperchase and Costa Coffee.

New entrances, escalators and two new lifts have been created as part of the plans.

The old cladding and brickwork has been removed and more windows were installed both on the side of the A459 Birmingham Road and the side facing the car park.

Tory councillor Udey Singh, who represents Tettenhall Regis, welcomed the news.

He said: "Any further investment into cities is always welcome by the city itself.

"Along with the expansion this will clearly result in an increased number of jobs in Wolverhampton which brings in more wealth and income into the city.

"Next is a strong brand which has been around for many years and I would hope that it continues to expand and Wolverhampton will continue to be a part of its further growth expansion plans."

The news comes amid fears over the future of Debenhams stores in Walsall, Wolverhampton, Merry Hill and Birmingham, as the retailer announced 50 shops will shut.

The high street has also been hit with the collapse of House of Fraser, Maplin, Toys R Us and Coast.

Councillor Singh said the expansion was a "great commitment" by Next.

He added: "In a time like this where internet sales are increasing this is a great commitment by Next investing in the city.

"Given the recent news of these high street major brands thinking of reducing in size, this is excellent news for the likes of Wolverhampton."

It is the latest investment in the Black Country by Next which opened one of the biggest Next stores in the UK in the former Sainsbury's superstore in Merry Hill in August, measuring 75,680 sq ft.

Next store manager at St Johns Retail Park, Kerry Smith, said: “We are all so excited to welcome you all to our new store on St Johns Retail Park.

"The store showcases all products as well as a Paperchase and a new look Costa.

"So come down and enjoy this fantastic new shopping experience in Wolverhampton.”
