Marks & Spencer closures: We spoke to Wolverhampton shoppers to see if M&S has lost its sparkle

This is not just any stores closure announcement, this is a Marks & Spencer store closures announcement. And it means around 60 towns and cities around the country face a disastrous blow to their high streets.

At a time when town centres are already struggling to cling on to their big names the loss of another department store will leave a gaping hole in the street scene, even if it is replaced by a high class Simply Food store.

In the Black Country the big M&S stores at Wolverhampton, Walsall and Merry Hill are in the firing line. M&S have said they have 'no cold hard list' of stores that could face closure, which will be of little comfort to the chain's staff at its 304 'full-line' stores around the country.

Coming in the wake of BHS's crash, it puts towns and smaller cities in a tough position. In Wolverhampton, M&S in Dudley Street sits almost opposite the now empty three-storey former BHS store.

Reports this week said the Merry Hill store could one of those at risk.

The Express & Star spoke to shoppers in Wolverhampton to get their thoughts.
