Druckers is bought out

Cakes and coffee shops chain Druckers – which started life in the West Midlands – has been sold to a company headed by entrepreneur Luke Johnson, the chairman of Channel 4.

Druckers Vienna Patisserie was founded by Andre Drucker in 1964, who wanted to let Brummies savour the cakes he knew as a young man in Vienna.

It now has 42 sites employing a total of 850 people, with shops in Wolverhampton, West Bromwich, Walsall, Merry Hill, Tamworth, Stafford, Halesowen and Solihull.

Mr Johnson's private equity fund, Risk Capital Partners, said it would be combining Druckers with its London-based Patisserie Valerie business. Both chains will retain their own name and identity, although they will be consolidated into one company.

"The two businesses are highly complementary," said Mr Johnson, who now becomes chairman of both.

A spokesman for Druckers said: "It is very much business as usual. It really is a marriage made in heaven, and will provide a very secure future for everyone."
