The council has applied to ensure mineshafts under former Loxdale Primary School playing fields are made safe before planning permission can be granted for new homes.

The mineshafts could be 150 metres deep and date back to when the area used to extract millions of tonnes of coal from the rich seam which helped fuel the economy of Britain and beyond.

The planning application submitted this week stated: "Wolverhampton Council is seeking planning permission to carry out engineering works below ground and remediation to the former school playing field, specifically to address former coal mining works.
