The line at Tamworth Low Level was closed off just before 7am, meaning that rail services to Lichfield Trent Valley Low Level, Tamworth Low Level and Nuneaton would not be served, while other services would either be delayed or diverted between Stafford and Rugby.

Members of the emergency services arrived at the scene to find a person on the tracks and despite the best efforts of paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service, the person was declared dead at the scene.

British Transport Police said they were not treating the death as suspicious, but passengers have been warned to expect major disruption until 12pm.

Rail providers were also providing rail replacement bus services, while London Northwestern Railway were also accepting tickets on services between London Euston and Liverpool Lime Street via Birmingham New Street.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Police were called at around 6.10am today (June 20) to reports of a casualty on the tracks at Tamworth railway station.

"Officers responded with paramedics, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: " We were called to an incident at Tamworth train station on Victoria Road at 6.13am and sent an ambulance and paramedic officer to the scene.

"On arrival, crews found a patient, but sadly, it quickly became clear the patient could not be saved and was confirmed dead at the scene."

Both London Northwestern Railway and CrossCountry Trains were also providing rail replacement bus services, with CrossCountry providing services between Birmingham New Street, Tamworth and Derby and London Northwestern between Rugby and Stafford.

"Train services running through this station may be delayed by up to 60 minutes or diverted between Stafford and Rugby.

"Lichfield Trent Valley Low Level, Tamworth Low Level and Nuneaton will not be served.

"Disruption is expected until 12pm.
