Sex offender's mother begs Government to improve safety at prison where her 'petrified' son lives 'in fear for his life'
A Black Country mother whose sex offender son is living in fear of his life at Swinfen Hall has begged the Government to improve safety at the Staffordshire prison.
Mothers of inmates have been forced to support one another online due to the regularity of violence in the Staffordshire Category C prison and Young Offenders Institution, the parent of one prisoner told the Express & Star.
The institution near Lichfield, which holds around 600 inmates between 18 and 28 years old, was the scene of another stabbing last Friday which saw an air ambulance helicopter scrambled to Swinfen Hall again.
A Black Country mother contacted the Express & Star after receiving distraught calls from her son, who is scared of leaving his cell in case he is attacked for being a sex offender.
She said: "I record his phone calls and can hear how terrified he is. There are so many attacks in Swinfen I worry every day I will get the call he has been killed.
"I know prison is not supposed to be a holiday camp but the violence in Swinfen Hall is out of control. The prisoners when they get out will not be rehabilitated but will want to kill someone."
She added: "A lot of the prisoners have autism or mental health issues and the prison officers have not got a clue how to deal with them, in fact they take the mick.
