Himley bonfire has been cancelled for 2020

Council chiefs have made the plea and are calling for residents to avoid holding their own, to prevent the spread of the virus.

Dudley Council has already cancelled this year's Himley Bonfire in a bid to keep people safe.

Instead, the authority is putting on a free firework extravaganza, which will be set off from various points across the borough.

Councillor Patrick Harley, leader of the council, said: "We are aiming for full borough coverage, so hopefully people will be able to step outside their homes, wherever they live, and see a free firework display safely.

"With cases of coronavirus on the rise, it’s critical we do all we can to stop the spread of the virus in the borough."
