The West Midlands Young Active Citizen Award is aimed at pupils in the region’s secondary schools who have gone the extra mile to support those who have been vulnerable at this time.

Professor Helen Higson OBE, the new Vice Lord-Lieutenant for the West Midlands, has chaired the organisation’s education committee for the last three years, and believes the award will shine a light on the positive impact young people make to their communities.

She said: “Working with young people and seeing the efforts they make to improve people’s lives is heart-warming and impressive.

"We felt these people needed to be celebrated for being such good citizens and by nominating them for this award we can highlight what they have done or are still doing, which in turn provides role-models for us all across the region.”

A letter is being sent to every secondary school head teacher in the West Midlands, encouraging them to nominate their deserving pupils.

In particular the Lieutenancy wants to hear about pupils who have volunteered in the community, for charity or a services organisation.

They are looking for nominees who have been creative and selfless in their activities or demonstrated by their actions and attitude what is possible in terms of exceptional resilience and leadership this year.

The deadline for nominations is October 31 and all nominations should be emailed to j.m.e.ottley@aston.ac.uk
