Barnado's urges West Midlands to help post-lockdown

A children's charity has launched an urgent appeal for people in the West Midlands to help its fundraising efforts post-lockdown.

Barnardo's made the plea after it lost millions of pounds in "crucial" income due to coronavirus – with shops closed and events cancelled.

Now they have called on residents in the region to form Barnardo's Helpers Group (BHGs) to raise awareness and support of the charity.

Regional fundraising manager Carrie Bater said:"In these extraordinary times, we need the public’s support so that we can survive this crisis and continue our essential work for many more years to come.

"By forming a new network of Barnardo’s Helpers Groups today, we can be ready to work together on local fundraising opportunities as soon as the lockdown restrictions are eased."

More Covid-19 coverage:

It comes after thousands of staff have been furloughed in a bid to keep the charity running amid the funding drop.

Volunteers who sign up will receive full support and training and help establish links with schools, sports clubs, businesses and others.

They can arrange fundraising events such as coffee mornings, cake sales and quizzes, with larger groups organising their own charity balls.

Barnardo's will help with recruitment and promotion, roles and responsibilities, policies and produces, along with other tasks.

The charity can also arrange for guest speakers from children’s services to update members on current activities – some BHGs have even welcomed celebrity supporters to their events.

Carrie added: "We hope to attract people of all ages and backgrounds. Some will have a few hours to spare for a good cause, while others will want to develop valuable skills in fundraising or event management.

"It’s a great way for people to have lots of fun and make new friends while supporting one of the UK’s leading charities. Every donation will make a difference."

People can sign up by calling Carrie on 07933 501175 or emailing carrie.bater@barnardos.org.uk
