Wolverhampton resident Roger Postance is currently starring in Channel 4's 'The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes'.

The four-part series which follows the UK’s first restaurant staffed by people living with dementia sees the grandfather-of-two serve up dishes to celebrities.

It comes two years after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and was forced to give up his 20-year truck driving career.

Mr Postance, who lives at Bradmore's Inglewood Court, said: "When I started the show, I didn't know what to expect. It was good fun.

"It's all about awareness. Dementia is one of the world's biggest killers, and that's terrible really."

The series, supported by the Alzheimer's Society, is inspired by a Japanese pop-up restaurant which opened in Tokyo last year and aims to combat stigmas surrounding dementia.

A host of celebrity diners and members of the public visited the restaurant over five weeks to put the newly-trained staff to the test.

Mr Postance and fellow dementia patients were trained for one week before being thrust into one of the highest-pressure working environments.

Despite enjoying his time on the show, the 64-year-old said the experience made him realise returning to work would be difficult.

Mr Postance, who fondly recalls delivering tyres for Formula 1 races during his career, added: "I did enjoy the show but it was very tiring, and one of the things with Alzheimer's is that you get tired very quickly at times.

"Other than that, it was something totally new, different from anything I have done before."

Mr Postance recalled symptoms first arising during one of his regular trips driving from Cannock to Manchester.

But during one particular journey as he was passing through Stoke, he could not remember where he was.

He remembers "coming out of it" and put his memory lapse down to tiredness, but found himself in similar situations twice more.

The father-of-two said he decided to see his GP after almost having a crash, with tests later confirming he had the disease.

The medic also told him that continuing to work might aggravate his symptoms, which currently include short-term memory loss.

Mr Postance, who previously lived in Castlecroft, added: "I was working full-time as a truck driver and I was travelling everywhere. Then all of a sudden, I had to stop because I couldn't drive.

"I was in total shock when I found out. It took two or three days to sink in."

The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes continues next Wednesday at 9pm.
