Penncricket Lane was shut at about 6pm and neighbours told to stay indoors as the bomb disposal unit rushed to the scene.

Neighbours said the man who used to live there died some time ago and an estate agent found the device while inspecting the property ahead of it potentially going on the market.

Resident Anne Potter, aged 68, said: "The agent went in to check it over and he came across it. It turned out to be a dud – it was only a small device.

"An old man used to live there and he died a couple of years ago. It was apparently found in a shed at the back. He then called the bomb squad and the rest is history."

The road was reopened before 7pm.
