West Midlands Police has investigated 66 paranormal sightings in the past five years, new figures show.

Among those are a ghost sighting on a motorway and a poltergeist in Wolverhampton.

In the Black Country, the biggest number of paranormal sightings were made in Sandwell, with eight taking place in the past five years.

Across the region, the most common reported sighting was a 'spirit', with 29 calls made to West Midlands Police.

'Ghosts' were reported on 26 occasions since 2014, while there were 10 'haunted' reports.

The figures were revealed through a Freedom of Information request by the Express & Star.

Police officers combed through the force's logs for reports under the names ghost, haunted, spirit and poltergeist.

Caution

However a West Midlands Police spokesman said the data should be 'interpreted with caution' as the information has come from a range of sources.

In one incident, police were called to reports of a poltergeist at a Wolverhampton address in 2017.

And one person reported spotting a 'ghost on a motorway' in 2016.

Unsurprisingly, police took 'no further action' in most paranormal reports after arriving at the scene.

One two occasions, police enquired further which was to reports of a 'spirit' in Dudley, in separate incidents in 2014 and 2017.

A further breakdown of the statistics show six paranormal reports were made in Dudley since 2014, five were made in Walsall and four in Wolverhampton.

One report, which was made in East Birmingham in 2017, was listed 'as false and malicious' and wasted police time.

The West Midlands is a historic region with a number of old buildings and areas allegedly haunted - including those in the Black Country.

Among a few of them is Dudley Castle, Dudley; The Station Hotel, Dudley; The Manor House, West Bromwich; Holbeche House, Kingswinford; and the woods of Cannock Chase.
