The star missed Tuesday's opening night at the Grand Theatre due to illness but it had been hoped he would be able to return.

Now theatre bosses have confirmed he is out for the remainder of the run, which ends on Saturday. The part of Uncle Fester is instead being played by understudy Scott Paige who has received glowing reviews for his performance.

Grand spokesman Scott Bird said staff learned only on Monday when the company arrived to set up that the former Coronation Street actor would not be appearing.

He added: "Les is obviously suffering from some illness, possibly his throat, they haven't disclosed what, and we wish him well in his recovery.

"Although he'd missed some performances at the last couple of venues, we had been expecting him to appear in Wolverhampton.

"We're disappointed for Les, who has a longstanding relationship with the theatre and we know he'd been looking forward to returning, as were to welcoming him, but at the same time this has been a celebration of Scott's talents and we're delighted for him."
