Firefighters were called to the vehicle on the eastbound carriageway between junction three for Albrighton and junction two for Wolverhampton.

One lane was blocked and there were reports of up to four miles of queues.

A spokesman for Highways England said that there is one lane closed and delays of about 40 minutes.

James Wright said: "It was just after 7am and we currently have one lane closed there.

"One vehicle was on fire. West Midlands Fire Service are leading."

The motorway was fully reopened by 8.25am.

There were further delays this afternoon while a section of barrier on the motorway was repaired.

The second lane on both sides of the motorway near Junction 3 were shut while workers replaced parts of the central reservation, which had collapsed.

Both east and west roads were down to a single lane, causing delays of up to 30 minutes in both directions.

Motorists faced queues across about three miles in both directions while the work was going on.

Highways England said that safety was its top priority in choosing to close sections of the motorway.

Drivers were warned to avoid the area entirely while work was taking place.
