Watch: Landmark Wolves pub The Wanderer is demolished

Fans had hoped to save it from the bulldozer - but as these pictures show, The Wanderer is about to be no more.

The early 20th century building on Molineux Street was bought by Wolves and is now being razed to the ground in preparation for redevelopment into a new car park.

The pub, which was previously known as The Fox, is being demolished by Tipton-based Humphries Demolition.

The arrival of the bulldozers has been met with sadness by many who have used the pub over the years. More than 2,000 people signed the 'Save The Wanderer' petition in a failed bid to keep the pub open.

Jason Matthews, pub preservation officer for Wolverhampton CAMRA, said he was sad to see another traditional pub disappear.

He said: "Sadly this sort of thing is becoming more and more frequent, where old style pubs are bought up and the land is sold off for other uses.

"At CAMRA we want to keep as many places open as possible, but as is the case with The Feathers, sometimes things happen that are beyond our control.

"The pub had been closed for sometime and it was clear another use would be found for it sooner or later. It is a shame that too many of our traditional pubs end up being forgotten about."

Wolves carried out a similar project on the site of the former Carillion offices on Waterloo Road in 2010, which created around 140 car parking spaces.

Other pubs with Wolves connections are also at risk. Lounge 107, formerly The Goal Post, could be knocked down and replaced with as ASDA petrol station, while planning permission has been granted for The Kings Arms, in Dudley Road, Blakenhall, to be turned into shops. The latter pub served as the club's headquarters in the 19th century.

Meanwhile Wolverhampton University plans to transform The Feathers on Molineux Street, into student facilities.
