She was discovered on Cheshire Road just before 11.50pm.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Ridding said: "Our inquiries are very much on-going and we are still in the early stages of an investigation.

"Officers remain in Smethwick this evening carrying out reassurance patrols, while we continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the woman's death.

"We're still appealing to anyone who was in the Cheshire Road area to contact us on either 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

Formal identification of the woman has not yet taken place and a forensic post mortem will be held in due course to establish the cause of her death.
