This is the first glimpse of a new multi-million pound leisure centre which will be built in Walsall Wood.

The futuristic image shows how Oak Park will look as part of the transformation of the town's leisure facilities.

An eight-lane 25m pool, six-court sports hall, fitness suite, dance studio and meeting rooms are part of the ambitious plans.

The striking structure will replace the outdated centre in Lichfield Road and is part of a combined £24m scheme to build another new centre in Bloxwich.

Walsall Council has given its backing to the joint project and work on Oak Park is expected to start within months.

It is hoped the new facilities will help tackle the borough's obesity problem. Most of the money for the centres will be borrowed and repaid over 25 years, with £2m coming from a government grant.

The council will not start paying any money back until 2015 when the building work is finished.

Council leader Sean Coughlan said there would be long-term benefits and the aim was to provide first class facilities.

He added their had already been contacted by people from areas such as Rushall, Brownhills and Pelsall in support of the Oak Park development.
