20 firefighters tackle scrapyard and pub blaze

[gallery] Around 20 firefighters have tackled a blaze at a scrapyard today which spread to a neighbouring derelict pub.

Flames engulfed a seven-ton wagon, a car and a pile of 30 tyres at the Smethwick premises in the early hours.

Fire crews were called to Billy's Tyres, in Rabone Lane, at around 2.30am to reports of the blaze.

Crews from Ladywood, Smethwick, West Bromwich and Handsworth attended as the fire escalated.

It quickly spread to the Old Corner House pub next door with flames tearing through the ground floor.

Six firefighters wearing breathing apparatus were sent to tackle the flames and bring the blaze under control.

Network Rail and British Transport Police were alerts about possible disruption to a nearby railway line.

Rabone Lane was closed for around three hours while the fire was tackled. Crews left the scene at around 5.30am
