Fire crews were called to Crankhall Lane at around 2.30pm to reports of a smash between a black Renault Clio and silver Renault Laguna on Saturday.

When they arrived they found the two badly damaged vehicles that had been involved in a side-on crash that left the driver of the Laguna trapped inside his car and injured.

Firefighters used cutting equipment and hydraulic rams to remove the car door to enable paramedics to get a spinal board inside.

He was assessed at the scene by ambulance crews and later taken to Sandwell Hospital for further treatment.

The driver of the Clio fled the scene before the police could arrive, but he was quickly detained nearby.

Officers arrested the 19-year-old Tipton man on suspicion of taking a car without the owner's consent.
