Murder inquiry after man found dead in street

A murder inquiry has been launched after  a man was discovered dead in a Staffordshire street.

The 22-year-old was found in Whitemill Lane, Stone, Staffordshire, in the early hours of this morning.

He had a serious stab wound and died at the scene.

A large area of Whitemill Lane had been cordoned off to allow a detailed forensic examination of the scene to take place. A weapon has been recovered from the scene and an autopsy will take place later.

Shortly before 3am this morning police say a 29-year-old male was arrested from an address in Stone in connection with the death and he will be questioned by detectives from the force CID. Specially trained family liaison officers will now work to support the victim's family.

A police spokesman said: "We are at the beginning of a very detailed investigation into the death of a young man. We have already spoken to a number of witnesses about this incident but we are really keen to speak to anyone else who may have any information about this incident. Part of our work includes support the with the family and keeping them updated about our work at this very difficult time, and those with any information can help all those affected by contacting us."

Local police officers and Police Community Support Officers will be in the area of Whitemill Lane throughout the weekend to provide reassurance and support to the local community.
