The pong, believed to have been caused by farmers in South Staffordshire spreading manure, was picked up by people in the Black Country boroughs.

Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter were filled with people complaining about the odour, which could be smelled areas such as Perton, Wightwick and Willenhall.

It is thought that the smell has been blown into the city by the wind, but Wolverhampton City Council said they had not had any complaints of a smell.

Laura MacDonald, from Willenhall, said she could smell it while she was out shopping in the city centre.

She said: "I have been able to smell something around the town. It smelled like horse manure and I could smell it really bad at about 4.30pm.

Gurdip Thandi, spokesman for Wolverhampton City Council, said: "We have not received any complaints to our public protection team about any unpleasant smells."

The smell disappeared at around 5.30pm.
