Bosses say the move will help them tackle rising energy costs.

Up to 530 existing street light columns and LED lanterns will be replaced under the scheme - which is expected to save around 55 per cent on energy costs compared to traditional lights.

The new systems will mean that the council will be able to reduce the number of lights that are on or dim others at the flick of a switch that will help them manage power usage throughout the year.

Roads with older high energy use lamps will be the first to get replacements.
