The 18-year-old, named locally as Christopher Vaughan, was removed from the water at the resort in Dorset at about 2.40am on Thursday.

Despite being taken by ambulance to Dorset County Hospital, the former Kings Charles I School sixth form student later died. It is believed the teenager had moved to the coastal town from his mother's home in Kidderminster last summer.

His death is not being treated as suspicious, but Dorset Police are trying to find out why he ended up in the harbour.

A spokesman said: "Dorset police officers, the ambulance service and HM Coastguard attended and the man was removed from the water and taken to Dorset County Hospital. Sadly he later died."

Also assisting the police was a crew from the Weymouth Royal Lifeguard Lifeboat Institution.
