A clean-up is being demanded at a Black Country canal which is being blighted by litter and anti-social behaviour.

Rubbish is strewn along the towpath at the stretch of the Ridgacre Branch Canal, close to Denbigh Crescent in West Bromwich, which is popular with cyclists and dog walkers.

Sandwell councillor Paul Moore said he has been inundated with complaints from residents and he is now calling on the Canal and River Trust to clean up the site.

Councillor Moore, who represents the Hateley Heath ward, said the site was strewn with litter, drinks cans and beer bottles.

"It is covered in rubbish," he said: "There is a concrete bin which is concreted into the ground which means that the bin cannot be emptied so it is just an eyesore.

"It is just becoming a complete magnet for anti-social behaviour.

"I have had quite a few people complain to me that live on that stretch – about 25 houses back on to that bit of the canal."
