Ellie Simmonds and David Beckham inspire Active Kids
Quadruple gold medallist Ellie Simmonds joined global superstar David Beckham to inspire the next generation at a training session in the capital.
The swimming sensation from Aldridge lined up alongside Beckham to run the rule over more than 170 children who attended the Sainsbury's Active Kids programme in London.
They were put through their paces at Lee Valley Athletics Centre in the capital as part of the bid to build on the legacy of last year's Olympic and Paralympic Games. Speaking at yesterday's event, Ellie, who won two golds, a silver and a bronze at London 2012, said: "Last summer showed us the power that sport has to inspire, which is why it is so important to make sure the next generation has the opportunity to get involved in sport and exercise in as many ways as possible."
Beckham, who retired this year after a glittering football career, added: "It's brilliant to see so many young people genuinely inspired to get involved in sport and activity following last summer. I'm passionate about inspiring kids to try a new sport and that's exactly what Active Kids is all about – encouraging kids to try, and hopefully really enjoy, something new."
Justin King, Sainsbury's chief executive, said: "Active Kids is a scheme that we're very proud of and we're delighted to have David and Ellie involved to help us inspire millions of children across the UK to lead healthier, more active lifestyles."
