It had been thought the long-awaited store, which anchors the £200 million New Square development, was due to open this Sunday, however bosses said today it will open next month.

The supermarket will be open for 24 hours a day from midnight on Sunday to 10pm on Saturdays, and 11am to 5pm on Sundays.

Meanwhile, Tesco chiefs today said that more than 5,000 people applied for the 275 new jobs at the store.

Store manager Tony Sinkinson said: "The response has been astounding."

Ninder Johal, of Sandwell Chamber of Commerce, said: "The Tesco opening is just part of a major regeneration of this area. It will attract major retailers to the region and it bodes well for West Bromwich, Sandwell and the wider Black Country."
